A SPORTING SONNET
A SPORTING SONNET
And so football resumes with no-one stood there to watch it;
With each ball passed like a secret, the offside rule finds fresh form,
As it applies to the fans who must now hooligan away in their houses;
Will each pass need more distance and who in the rush and the run
Can conform? Can you control football like chess, with each move
Made to be studied? You can’t remote view a tackle, or even unflesh a
foul.
And what of the players’ sweet smooch when they score a goal and need
Loving? Those captained embraces, and celebratory clasps aren’t allowed.
And so the fans watch on screens, from the terraces of their sofas.
This reduces football to fiction, as each successive game broadcasts
out.
My friend Simon says, apply sound, like an antique Radio play:
Fake sensation, to reunite the religion that fashions Priests from each
Lout. What future now, for Sport as a whole? Long shot Cricket?
For now, they have become Gladiators as time takes them over
And forces them all underground.
