IT’STHE END OF AN ERA, VERA

IT’STHE END OF AN ERA, VERA

It’s the end of an era, Vera
A phrase that my friend Simon texts,
Ably rhyming, just as your scored
Past hearts in their rising,

So now does your own song
Ascend.

Can Lewis Capaldi do that?
I suppose he can some would argue.
But you sang from a time in which
Verses made even opposing sides

Seem like friends.

103.

You made it to the supposed end
Of the Lockdown. Now, heaven’s cages
Swiftly transport Dover’s bird. You were
Too out of fashion for me, and yet,

Like Roger Waters did, I respect you.
Of who you were, I know nothing.
But of what you did, we all heard.
A singer as song. No-one really cares

About the composer. I always do.
Here, however, your contribution
Becomes reason’s theme. You got
Them all through the war with as much

Credit as Winston. From lost ears, then,
Your era. Unlike most young today,
I will listen. Like those ancient Chinese
Women, now you mistress the mountain

To become those wings
Over Dover.
Dear Dame Vera Lynn.
Live your dream.
