APHRODITE'S LOVER

Savitri Pema

Galloping to the shore on foaming
white horses, Aphrodite showers
sly duplicitous kisses over silky
silicon beaches, swooning, retreating.

No pretence at modesty, nor
maidenly guile, she returns from
fathomless inky depths, stroking,
touching, audaciously cavorting.

Helio’s rays scorch craggy promontories,
limbs, sinews, deadened hearts loosening,
under blazing golden heat blinding,
blue sky arching, to heavenly Elysium.

Boneless bodies stretching and extending,
skin; tissue; muscle and mind
relaxing, molten veins running
marathons, on saline laden blood.

Travel during the pandemic has been difficult, if not impossible, especially to take much needed holidays. ‘Aphrodite’ is about my love of the sea: of  memories of holidays on Greek islands that I escape to in my head whenever I need to escape, to connect with nature, with myself.  The sights and sounds always have a therapeutic effect on my mind.
