Piece 3 of Life as a Mosaic: I never thought I would find in Covid the kind of company I wished for.

Brigitte Deneck

Since March I had been living on Zoom. Had a morning meeting at 8.00.

Then another one at 11.00. Then the Elders meeting once a week.

And the Social Commons. Inquiring into a promise for the world:

“People experience their power and open up to dialog”.

Meanwhile I kept safe in my house, napped, lunched in the garden,

and walked in nature every day - 3 km with my trekking poles. It felt idyllic.

I did not meet anybody face to face.

No body, no problem.

One day a call came: your hip replacement is now scheduled.

You will receive information on the date.

Some brochures came from the hospital, which I put aside.

Another day, I opened the envelope and found a letter that gave a date:

in 10 days.

I called the friends who had offered help.

One drove 200 km as a whole to take me to the pre-assessment,

and made sure he was providing the best of the best all the way.

Another one took me to the covid test 3 days before.

The one who lived near the hospital offered to accommodate me when discharged.

Another one took me back to my house where she could stay and help me

for a few days.

An agency matching housesharers and householders found me somebody to stay

at my house and help me for 2 months - a foreign doctor seeking the British

qualification.

Extreme hand washing and mask wearing were my rules …. all the people

followed, while I got back on my feet - transformed.

I had gradually given up that I should keep control of everything.

From the distance, people showed up in three dimensions.

They respected my boundaries, showed me how to climb the stairs,

left me some dinner and let me sit in front of the fireplace.

Now my space is shared again.
