THE SATURDAY RAIN by David Erdos - A Ghost Story by David Erdos
THE SATURDAY RAIN
(A Ghost Story)
The world shrinks, bound by rain, as the thoughts
Of where togo adjust landscape, pulling it back,
Like the blanket, or the duvet of course, on my bed.
My mother slept here as this was the room
Where she suffered. And as she leases hold,
So the freedom to remain in this world remains fed.
Suddenly, London seems split, as separate as an Island.
And yet, in this ocean, created by rain, I am drowned;
Placing my face between waves of the electric sort
And from music, swimming through these bright
Sensations for a means to retrieve the profound.
Saturdays as a child used to shield such protection.
With some enchanting film from the 50s
On the afternoon TV screen. And then, around 6,
The local fish and chips with my parents; all sadly
Gone now, untasted, with those former images, too,
Long unseen. Tonight, I will be on a zoom call
With friends, but the camera will still iris out and refocus,
On not only distance, but on the proximity I fear,
Of fresh ghosts, by which I don’t mean the dead,
But rather those far, but living; they, or she, who friends
Juxtapose now and cover, while remaining part
Of the rain which falls close. Love is loud in these drops.
As tears from the past make a movie. And so the film
I’m now watching frames and recaptures in long shot
A tectonic shifting, in which all of those lost seas
Of passion in no time at all forsake coasts.
The weekend’s in full flow but watch how these days
Run together. As images dissolve distance into mind
Pictures that still watercolour all of the binds and bleeds
We loved most.
